Choosing and Using Patio Furniture

0

Buying patio furniture can be challenging if you’re not armed with plenty of information ahead of your shopping trip. There are many more choices in styles and materials than there were, say, a decade ago. Here’s a basic primer on how to prepare for what you’ll find “out there” and how to maximize the impact of the furniture you choose.

It’s a good idea to go shopping for patio furniture already knowing the dimensions of your space. That way, you can enlist the help of a sales person when deciding, for example, how many seating areas you’ll need. Bring with you a concept of the style you want to create outdoors. Decide whether you want traditional, American regional (Southwestern or Californian, for example), a sleek, contemporary look or any combination of styles.

You don’t necessarily have to spend a lot, but in general, heavier furniture is more durable. Good choices for outdoor furniture frames include teak--- it’s expensive but extraordinarily water-resistant---and aluminum. It’s a good idea to avoid cheap, resin furniture because it just doesn’t last very long.

But don’t be swayed by only the construction material. Examine the furniture and sit in it before you buy. It may be tempting to buy something online or on clearance, but you really need to visually inspect it to see how well it’s made. Look for any cracks in the frame and make sure the joints are nicely welded.
